Certification of Design (Building Structures)
Structural Engineers Registration Ltd (SER) is the appointed scheme provider for design of building structures in Scotland. This certification scheme allows Approved Certifiers to prove that a building meets the design requirements from foundations to the superstructure to ensure it is safe and compliant with building regulations.
There are many benefits to being part of the scheme including, Approved certifiers are able to provide an assured service, and ensure compliance of a design with building regulations.
Individuals who want to join the scheme
Applications to join the Scheme are to be made on-line. There is no provision for paper applications (although a signed copy of the application needs to be submitted in paper form). Payments are also to be made online, though the Scheme will also accept cheques. Cheques must be made payable to 'SER Limited' and applicants need to ensure that the cheque is attached to a proforma generated from the website, and their application number is written on the back of the cheque (an application number will be allocated once you have completed Step 1 of your application).
This applications number is unique to the applicant, and is used to log into the website.
The application fee for individuals is £25 plus VAT. The application fee for Firms is £100 plus VAT. The same fees apply for annual renewal of membership. When renewal of registration is required, an email reminder will be sent out to pay the annual renewal fee one month before it becomes due.
Please apply in the following order:
- Make an application as an individual certifier (ACD).
- Once you have received the application number for this individual, you can then make the application for your firm as an approved body (AB), making reference to this application number during the signup process.
Submission of an application by a Firm to join the Scheme must be made AFTER an application for an individual Chartered Engineer employed by the Firm has been submitted. The signed copies of the application forms may be posted together.
Sole Practitioners need to be both a Certifier and an Approved Body and must submit both applications in the order stipulated above. The combined fee for both types of application is £75 plus VAT. The same fee applies for renewal of membership. When renewal of membership is required, an email reminder will be sent out to pay the annual renewal fee one month before it becomes due.
Once payment is made, an invoice will be automatically generated to applicants for VAT purposes.
Once registered, ACD and AB registration is for a 5 year period initially. Each year, ACDs and ABs must renew their membership. Every 5 years, ACDs and ABs are expected to seek re-registration.
