Role of an Approved Certifier

The Building (Scotland) Act 2003 established a role for suitably qualified building professionals to accept responsibility for ensuring that certain design or construction work complies with the building regulations. To be an Approved Certifier you must belong to an approved scheme and meet the standards agreed with the Scottish Government Building Standards Division (BSD). You must also be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of building standards. Building professionals, such as architects, engineers, electricians and plumbers who can demonstrate they have the appropriate qualifications and experience for the role can join a relevant certification scheme as an Approved Certifier.

How to Join a Scheme

The schemes are open to any individual or firm that meets the entry criteria.  It is not conditional on being a member of any trade body or professional institution. The criteria for membership vary between different schemes depending on the scope of work to be certified.
